My Hair Angel

It was only a few weeks ago I looked at my hair, fed up. It always seems dry, yet I'm forever moisturising it. It's grown out, but has no shape. It's so bushy it takes forever to do each day.
The journey of leaving relaxers and hair straighteners, has been long, and today more woman are embracing their curls and learn how to manage them.

I, however was contemplated cutting it short again and thought to revert back to relaxing it after 4 years. Neither I really wanted to do. I'm still learning and trying to find what is best and works well for my hair. I've watched endless amounts of Youtube videos seeking advice from others with curly or unruly hair. But what I need is a miracle!

Brown Beauty Talk-special guest,  Subrina Kidd
My prayers were answered. My hair Angel had come to save me from the woes of my natural curly hair. The amazing Subrina Kidd, who I'd been introduced to a few years back at the Toni and Guy academy called me to see if I was free to come into the salon and model for her.
After many years working at Toni and Guy Subrina was selected to become part of Aveda, one of the leading hair specialists. With her wealth and knowledge she has become one of their top hair stylists in London.

It was not my first time visiting Sabrina at Aveda,  last time she was holding training day for international stylists. That particular day I had opted to a blow dry and press from one of the Italian reps.

My straight hair even survived a gym session.

Must Be Heaven.
8:30 Monday morning, over a year later, I'm battling with the commuter zombies to get to Aveda, Holborn. It's the last week Sabrina will be based here as she moves to a boutique salon in Marylebone.
Today Sabrina is presenting to new and establish stylists, teaching them how to work with curly and coily hair. I'm called in at extra early as Sabrina has seen online that my hair has been coloured and grown considerably since we last met.
I enter the salon wearing a woolly hat, it's a cover for the mess that under it. I've rolled out of bed pinned the bits sticking up down from yesterdays style.
It looks like she's got her work cut out, but honestly. Don't let afro hair scare you. It looks more frightening than it actually is.

Thats a lot of hair!
Step one- Brush out:
As a lay back and enjoyed the heavenly aromas filling the shampoo lounge i learnt a few little secrets  Life is so much easier when you brush your hair out before washing -I was combing my hair whilst conditioning, which is very difficult and still having to comb out and brush again after drying. I could halve the time but using the method Sabrina was using and which is also used for long hair. (Brush, section and pull wash.)
Moisturising shampoo and conditioner has always been my go to product as my hair is always dry. But i noticed even after 2-3 washes it wasn't completely clean and product was still clinging on. Sabrina recommended using a cleansing shampoo to help deal with this. Aveda have a great range for all hair types and during your consulation your hair stylist will look closely at the make up of your hair and select the best products to use.
My hair wash treatment consisted of about three different products, which applied gently. I could actively feel the products doing their work. Instantly my hair felts lighter and hydrated.

A selection of products available from Aveda.

Step Two- The Blow out.
Still in sections (sectioning it the key to everything) we begin to blow dry my hair.
As I I'm trimming away the nasty split ends.
Sabrina needs to see the full length of my hair and shape.
Time for a trim.
There is an art to cutting curly hair. Speaking from experience, it's best NOT to do it yourself.
Step Three: The cut-
I should be getting a lot more chopped off than I am,
but I would like to retain as much length as possible.
Listening to my requirement Sabrina and works with this.
As you can see, I have coloured my hair (I did that myself too, also not a good idea)
so that also plays a part in Sabrina analysis.
After my cut, my hair felt so much healthier and has great shape.
N.B if you too are trying to retain length, it is advised to go back for a trim every 12 weeks.
Step Four- Styling:
As much as I love the massive Diana Ross blow out look, it's time to finish off my hair with a nice twist out.
I've not yet mastered doing this myself, so I'm super excited.
My hair is sectioned into eight parts and pulled and pinned into place. ( Tip: Where you pin it will be the direction it sits).

Subrina Kidd, Aveda specialist talking me through the twist out.

Step Five- Steam

No longer a hot mess, just Hot!
15 minutes under the hood drier helps the
 Brilliant Anti- Humectant Pomade penitrate,
leaving the hair shiny and frizz free.
Tender loving hair.
I must return for my trim in 2 months....I must!
End Result.
I am so happy with my hair. Sabrina is truly passionate about her craft, this came across both as she spoke to me as the guest and also as she shared her knowledge to the other stylists.

After my appointment my hair feels fuller, it has great shape and body, yet really feels light and silky. It bounces as I walk and moves freely as I do. But best of all, it shines and not longer feels dry and thirsty. Not only do I have bounce in my hair, but their is a bounce in my step as I walk out confident that my hair looks its best, as it's been treated by the best, with products that work best!
