Just around the river bend

Image
The weekend is here and we are packing up to go to Boone to paddle on the Des Moines River. My cousin has been rowing for many years, she and her husband are up at 5am every morning to get out on the river before work. Lucky for us, we leave in the afternoon for a day of adventure. The quietness around when on the water is one that everyone should experience if they can. We had our beer attached to our boat, nice and chilled and perfect for stopping and watching the beauty of nature. The next day my cousin left a kayak out for me whilst they went out with their sprint team. I cautiously got into the kayak to venture out on my own. Mother waved my off as I tried to get back into the motion that I learnt the day before. I felt a bit rock as nerves crept in realising that my kayak was so far away from the land and the chance of me falling was possible, but no one would be around to help me. Pushing this thought to the back of my mind, I focused on what was happeni

Let's stop and enjoy

Always creative and trying to show what vision I see.  The beauty in simple things.

A little city tour

I'm travelling again, with mother. I seem to always have to go somewhere with her every single often.  A few months ago we were in Poland,  which was beautiful and now, this month we are in Iowa, USA. This post isn't going to have as much writing. U want to share my photos of Des Moines. I spent a week searching to buy a canon 5D,  but had to put that off cos those thing a bloody expensive. So here's what I've captured with my blackberry q5. We visited The Art Centre- the building looked like a mini Getty Centre. Then stopped off at Salisbury House which was built from material shipped over from England.  We saw the Governor's house on Terrence Hill.  Paid a visit to the Grand Capitol hall and walked along the dam by the Women of Achievement bridge.

A repost of Some Old Writing

A little taste of Romance. So you may have recalled me saying about me always being single. Well just a few weeks after that post you would not believe what happened?!!! Yes you guessed it...I had a date. Well, I thought I was just meeting a friend for drinks. This friend I think I met on twitter- so 21 st century. He'd invited me down to the site he was working at, but due to lack of communication; that failed. So once out of our busy period we finally met up. Now details were vague on our meeting. 'Meet at 6pm and we'll go to get some food or some swanky bar. Not too sure of where either was, I made my way to into London and text on my arrival. 10 mins later, I'd had no reply! And started to stress, I was nervous, I'd had dates stand me up on various occasions and now I was thinking that this guy had seen me waited and walked on by. Argh! I hate dating, always a massive fail. Time now drew to 6:27pm and I'm still waiting, so I boldly sent another text sa

This little light of mine

As I drifted off to sleep, I felt that there was something stopping me from falling into my blissful slumber.  For the last three years I have become accustomed to sleeping with a light on. This habit started soon after my dad passed away. I'd be asleep then suddenly wake for some reason or other. So I'd put my lamp on and wake in the morning finding that I'd fallen asleep with it on. Every night this seemed to be the pattern until I'd just leave it on as soon as I got into bed.  It sounds childish, I'd always fall asleep with my light on as a hold, but mum or dad would turn it out when they came up to bed. Now I guess this habit is security.  It's funny though, I wake up roughly about 4am and turn the lamp off.  The other night  was finding it a bit difficult to get to sleep. The light from the lamp felt too bright, but I didn't want to turn it off. I pulled my covers over my head, but I could still see the light. I needed the room darker. My solution was t

There's nothing like a good old Family party, where you haven't seen some people in a long time and with the party being an event to celebrate a wedding/ engagement/ child, something to do with being a union, you can guarantee that if you turn up without a 'plus one' you are going to be the target for prying questions. I totally forgot that this would be the case until I was making my rounds at the luncheon. The first person, an elderly Jamaican gentleman, just dropped it in there without warning. 'So when are you finally going to get married?' It was like a truck hit me, I did not expect that from him. All I could say was 'one day.' Hoping that that was enough to kill that subject. But no, 'are you in a relationship?' 'No' 'Why not?' 'Don't know?' 'So when are you going to get a boyfriend? You can't be single you're whole life.' 'Ah well, some day, these things take time and careful pla

Preface...By D.L.Sharman

PREFACE Last night as I watched a BBC film of the historic river Nile I was impressed by a remark of Stanley after meeting Dr. Livingstone. So impressed was he with the doctors dedication that he felt a deep urge to continue the great work of discovering this wonderful part of creation. It made me realise the tremendous importance of Africa and the need for its resources to be nurtured and cared for; so much of life there is dependent on the tropical rain forests that are responsible for feeding the ground with essential nutrients, and are also a huge factor in the rainfall that fills the great lakes, Victoria, Tanganyika, and Prince Albert and Edward which in turn supply the Congo and Nile rivers. In the case of the Nile, it runs through nearly four thousand miles of desert yet never runs dry! To view the Nile as a whole it can readily be seen that this four thousand mile monster crosses man made borders wily nilly as if to emphasise to us humans to share this bounty of life. E

Active Brain

Rather annoyingly I have noticed that all my ideas come to light just as I'm about to go to sleep or in the really early hours of the morning. Which is a pain as I'm far too comfortable to get up and my note book or laptop. I recall just over a year ago I would keep a note book by my bed because of this fact. But new habits die rather quickly. So the plan is, if I'm not getting up to go to work; I'll jump straight on my computer and write....DAY 1 Successful. Skimming through my previous blog posts I went back to the beginning, where I wrote that I will be posting some of my father's writing. We'll I'm not going to lie, it took me ages to copying everything to computer. Not because there was too much of it,I probably could have done it in a week if I cancelled everything. But because I was a little lazy and I also have to go to work, let's not forget you also have to be in the right mind frame to put pen to paper/ fingers to keys. Well anyhow,

Visa application

I am currently lying in bed after spending most of the day writing emails begging for references. After a meeting the other day with Next Stop LAX, I am compiling all the documents that I need to apply for my US visa. I hate asking people for things, but if I'm going to take this step, I'm must drag myself back to my laptop and carry on with the emails. And that's the easiest part of the process. Wish me luck. xxx
